What is an Overdenture?

Nearly all denture wearers are well aware of the limitations of dentures and the fact that as the aging process continues there is less retention and the dentures often become ill-fitting over time.

At the Oral Facial & Implant Centre we can assist in converting your denture into a dental implant stabilised denture known as an Overdenture. In many cases this conversion can happen on the same day as the implants are placed.

Having your dentures partially secured through anchors to the implants is an effective, affordable and fairly long-term solution. It is suitable for those patients who do not want to the expense of full arch rehabilitation like All-on-4® and are happy with a removable option but just want a little more stability so the denture doesn’t fall out when speaking or eating. In some cases fixed and full arch rehabilitation is not suitable or advised and hence the overdenture is a minimally invasive solution to the age old problem of dentures.

Can conversion of denture to overdenture be done in a day?

At the Oral Facial & Implant Centre we work with local Toowoomba Prosthetists and Dental Specialist Prosthodontists to facilitate conversion of dentures to implant supported overdentures often on the same day. Dr John Webster can perform the surgery under local or general anaesthetic and will work with your preferred restoring team to achieve the most optimal aesthetic and functional outcome with the most minimally invasive solution. In some cases the implants will need time to fuse to the bone in the jaw, a process called osseointegration over 3-6 months, before the implants can be used to assist in supporting and retaining the denture.

If you are considering having denture stabilisation implants placed, it would be difficult to find a better service. If you are a DVA Gold Card holder your implants to support the denture conversion to an overdenture are usually fully covered by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs if the dental implants are placed by a Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon like Dr John Webster.
